Sustainability Reporting using (GRI) G4

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is a non-profit organisation that provides a comprehensive set of guidance for corporate sustainability reporting. The latest version, G4, was launched in May 2013 and represents an important shift emphasis.

How IMS Consulting can help?

IMS Consulting is ideally placed to help your company with every step of the GRI sustainability reporting process

  • GRI G4 assurance
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Materiality assessment 'what is important'
  • Report writing

The importance of Materiality

There are a number of changes to the updated G4 framework, but arguably the most significant is the requirement for a much greater emphasis on materiality*. Now placed by GRI at the centre of the reporting process, establishing what is material is fundamentally reliant on stakeholder engagement. Companies must identify the most important impacts from the perspective of their stakeholders, disclose the full list, and tailor the reports to align with the results.

* Materiality refers to those impacts or aspects of sustainability that matter most to a company or its stakeholders.

IMS Consulting and Morgan Sindall Group

Over the past 4 years IMS has helped us refine our strategic approach to sustainability by working with us to develop and implement our sustainability roadmap. This involved an engagement exercise, facilitation and inputting into our steering groups which assisted in determining what is important or 'material' to the Groups's stakeholders. This materiality assessment established the priority areas, actions and milestones which gave our overall communication plan regarding sustainability messages a clear focus

We would certainly recommend IMS to assist any organisation in the creation and delivery of sustainability roadmaps, strategy and communications. Since working with IMS 4 years ago, our Group's communication of its sustainability performance has gone from strength to strength most recently with its latest Sustainability Report being one of the first produced with reference to the Global Reporting Initiative G4 standard.

It is our belief that being a sustainable business is fundamental to the way we create value, both in terms of how we operate as a Group and the projects that we deliver.
